Nakamura Utaemon IV as Danshichi Kurobei — Ukiyo-e Kabuki Canvas Print (8″ × 10″)
About the Artwork
This canvas print reproduces a celebrated ukiyo-e woodblock print created in 1850 by Utagawa Kunimasu (歌川国升, active 1830–52), a student of the renowned Utagawa Kunisada.
The original work — a vertical chūban nishiki-e in ink and color on paper — is held in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Object No. 2011.145).
The subject is the kabuki superstar Nakamura Utaemon IV portrayed as Danshichi Kurobei (団七九郎兵衛), the iconic anti-hero of the vendetta drama Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami.
Danshichi is one of the most dramatic figures in the kabuki repertoire, traditionally depicted with an elaborate full-body tattoo — a visual signature that signals both his rough vitality and his outsider status.
In this composition, only his arms are exposed, allowing Kunimasu to suggest the tattoo motif with characteristic restraint.
Kunimasu himself remains a somewhat mysterious figure in the history of Osaka ukiyo-e. Believed to have been born into wealth, he studied print design under Kunisada in Edo before returning to Osaka, where he became an important sponsor and practitioner of regional print production.
