Suzuki Harunobu "Evening Snow on a Floss Shaper" – Edo Period Japanese Art Canvas Print (c. 1766)

Evening Snow on a Floss Shaper (Nurioke no bosetsu), created around 1766 by Suzuki Harunobu (c. 1725–1770), is one of eight prints from the celebrated series Eight Views of the Parlor (Zashiki hakkei), widely regarded as a landmark moment in the history of Japanese printmaking.

Harunobu was among the first artists to master the newly developed technique of full-color woodblock printing, and this series showcases that achievement at its most refined.

Each print in the set offers a witty visual pun on the classical Chinese theme of the "Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers" — transplanted from misty landscapes into the intimate world of an Edo-period parlor.

Here, billowing silk floss stands in for snow, and the lacquered floss shaper becomes the mountain. It is the kind of layered joke that would have delighted its original audience: wealthy, poetry-loving townsmen who took pleasure in finding beauty and wit in the everyday.


The Art Institute of Chicago's set is believed to be the first edition, distinguished by the handwritten signature of the patron Kyosen rather than Harunobu's own — a detail that makes it especially significant to scholars of the period.
