Few artistic visions of Japan have captured the imagination quite like Utagawa Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido — and Hamamatsu stands as one of its most atmospheric and evocative stops along the way.
Created between roughly 1837 and 1842, this print belongs to the Kyoka iri Tokaido edition of the series, distinguished by the inclusion of kyoka — playful, witty short poems that accompany each scene.
Hiroshige (1797–1858) was the undisputed master of Japanese landscape printmaking, and throughout the Tokaido series he transformed the ancient highway connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) to Kyoto into a procession of fleeting moods: shifting weather, the quiet drama of seasons, and the small human stories played out at each post town along the road.
Hamamatsu, situated on the Pacific coast in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture, was one of the most storied stations on the route — a place of pine-lined shores and changing skies that gave Hiroshige ample material to work with.
His landscapes never merely record a place; they conjure a feeling, a time of day, a temperature in the air.
Originally produced as a compact chuban-format woodblock print, this work is held in the Clarence Buckingham Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago.
